A destination that's actually reachable

Far enough to feel like you've left the city behind — and close enough that no one has to fly. Guests coming from Portland can make an easy drive up Route 202. Guests coming from Boston are looking at about three hours. There are hotels and Airbnbs within 20–30 minutes of the farm in Augusta and the lakes region, and the drive through central Maine in any season is genuinely beautiful.

What Portland-area couples tend to find

The venues immediately around Portland have something South Road Farm doesn't: proximity to the city. What South Road Farm has that they don't: 66 uninterrupted acres, a full weekend with no shared use, a farmhouse included in the rental, and pricing that reflects being off the beaten path rather than being five minutes from the Old Port. For couples who want their wedding to feel like a genuine escape, that hour north is the feature, not the bug.

"After the wedding, I kept returning to the farm, drawn back again and again. I left my job, with its constant travel to Boston and New Hampshire, and started a small-batch pesto business with my aunt — South Road Farm Pesto, growing many of the herbs on the farm. Each time I headed home to southern Maine, I felt the pull to turn around. In time, I did."

— Dyanna Lincoln, whose family farmed this land for decades

The area around South Road Farm

The drive from Portland to South Road Farm is itself part of the experience. Route 202 north through Winthrop and Wayne follows the edge of several lakes — Maranacook Lake, Androscoggin Lake, Echo Lake — before arriving in Fayette. Most guests find the drive passes quickly. Augusta, about 30 minutes from the farm, serves well as a guest hub — it has hotels from most major chains, a growing downtown dining scene along Water Street, and easy access back to I-95 for guests traveling from southern Maine, Boston, or beyond. The Oak Table & Bar and Otto's on the River on the Kennebec are both well-regarded options for welcome dinners.

Common questions

What does a weekend at South Road Farm cost?

Weekend rentals start at $12,000. That's a single, all-in price — no à la carte fees, no vendor surcharges, no hidden add-ons. You get the full property: both barns, the farmhouse, all ceremony sites, and every outdoor space from Friday afternoon through Sunday midday. Pricing varies by weekend, with peak dates in September and October priced higher. Reach out and we'll send a full breakdown.

How many guests can South Road Farm accommodate?

South Road Farm comfortably hosts up to 150 guests for ceremonies and receptions, with space for dining, dancing, and celebrating both indoors and out — across two barns, the courtyard, and the surrounding grounds.

How long is the weekend rental?

The property is yours from Friday afternoon through Sunday at noon. That includes time to arrive, set up, rehearse, celebrate, and wind down without feeling rushed at any point. Sunday morning is part of every booking, not an add-on.

Can we choose our own vendors?

Yes. You're free to choose your own caterer, bar service, photographer, florist, and entertainment. We do require a licensed and insured bar service to handle alcohol, and a professional wedding planner or day-of coordinator.

Is shuttle service required?

Yes — on-site parking accommodates approximately 50 vehicles, so for larger guest lists a shuttle is required. Most couples arrange shuttles from a central hotel block in Augusta. We're happy to share vendor recommendations.

Is the farmhouse included in the rental price?

Yes. The farmhouse is included in every weekend rental at no additional charge. It sleeps up to 10 guests across four bedrooms and is part of the weekend package.

How do guests get to South Road Farm from Portland?

The most common route is I-295 North to Route 202 West toward Augusta, then north to Fayette — about an hour depending on traffic. We provide all guests with detailed directions and the farm is well-marked. Many couples arrange shuttle service from a central hotel in Augusta for guests who prefer not to drive.

Are there hotels near the farm?

Yes — Augusta has a full range of hotel options 30 minutes away, and the lakes region has numerous Airbnbs and inns within 20 minutes of the property. We're happy to share a lodging guide with your guests as part of the planning process.

How does South Road Farm compare to Portland-area venues in price?

Weekend rentals at South Road Farm start at $12,000 — which includes the full property, both barns, and the farmhouse for up to 10 overnight guests. Portland-area barn venues at a comparable level typically run significantly higher, often for a single-day rental without on-site accommodations. The distance north is, in part, what makes the pricing what it is.

About the farm

South Road Farm has been on this land since 1793. The post-and-beam barns went up in the early 1800s. The property ran as a working farm continuously until 2018 — longer than Maine has been a state. What you see now is the result of several years of restoration work done largely by hand by Dave, a lifelong carpenter and co-owner of the property.

We host a limited number of weddings each season, by design. Every couple gets the same thing: the whole property, the whole weekend, our full attention.
